Coronavirus (COVID-19) impact on World Vision operations

In support of public health recommendations outlined by the World Health Organization, some sponsorship program activities have been temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. Activities may include sponsor queries and correspondence, sponsor visits, gift notifications and gift deliveries. In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!  
 

With the help of your generous and loving support, life in Jhinaighati has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, and its members are working together to tackles new ones. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

The Jhinaighati community is located in a rural area about 200 km north of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. Although Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, the greatest number of its citizens live in rural areas like Jhinaighati. Powerful monsoons hit the area annually from May to October, often causing severe flooding, crop damage, and casualties. Most families in this community live well below the poverty line.

Education
  • Child literacy rate increased from 33% to 80% over 10 years
  • Completion of basic education increased from 55% to 60% over three years
  • 100 children from disadvantaged backgrounds were supported with education
Health and Nutrition
  • 704 mothers and caregivers received training on proper feeding practices and how to keep their children well-nourished
  • The percentage of children under five-years-old who are underweight decreased from 43% to 25%
  • 4,794 parents and caregivers learned about common childhood illnesses and how to improve their children's health
  • Percentage of children under 5 who are short for their age decreased from 49% to 22% in 7 years
  • 1,200 women were counselled on how to properly care for themselves and their babies during and after pregnancy.
Livelihood
  • 500 families received vegetables seeds and learned techniques to improve crop production
  • The average yearly income of families increased by 53% over seven years
  • Percentage of households that consumed three meals a day increased from 68% to 82%
  • 33% of the families reported improved household income from on-farm production and about 58% from off-farm production
  • 176 poor families received heifers to improve productivity and help meet their family needs
  • 102 people are part of savings groups, helping them meet their financial needs and access small loans
  • 20 ultra-poor groups benefitted from an economic assistance project
